The buildings date back to the late 1800s when they were first used as summer camps. A group of Methodists held week-long revivals during the summer who come and stay in tents on the grounds overnight.
From 1859 to 1875 Grimsby Beach was a Methodist meeting ground and campsite for prayer and worship. In 1875, the organizers began replacing the tents with the cottages.
Grimsby Beach attractions over the years included hotels, a restaurant, tennis courts, a heart-shaped garden, a sports field for football. In 1888, they built a large auditorium The Temple.
In 1909 the Methodist group that owned the park went bankrupt.
